CAMP (Y/N?): Y (2 nights, carcamp) MY ACTIVITIES: Hiking, Astronomy, PuttPutt NOTES: Unique Falls; Lake Since the mid-1990s, I have thought about visiting High Falls State Park. I remember driving on I-75 headed to university and imagining exploring this place. Of course, I never had 'time' or was 'alone' and felt it would be a bigger undertaking than I ever had 'time' for.
High Falls is super easy to access from the interstate. It is interesting in the sprawling layout and surrounding businesses, but it works. My daughter and I brought our 2 dogs and the big tent for this trip. We set up the site, but ended up car camping (it is so easy to car camp!). This site had lots of ants due to time of year and rainfall (I assume), but the only problem they caused was not being able to leave the dogs food out for long. We explored a bit, played putt-putt, considered going to the pool, and relaxed with books. So many books and hammock time! A free stargazing event was planned for Saturday night with a local group Flint River Astronomy Club. Telescopes combined with knowledgeable and passionate folk were on hand. We saw the rings of Saturn, Jupiter, Polaris, and more than I can remember to name. Here, I finally signed up for the Rewards Program. I did not, from some strange reason, start collecting the Junior Range pins. (now, I get to go back to this and all previous state parks to complete my collection lol). As we were leaving, I spent a bit of time talking with the Camp Host - she and her labodoodle and cat enjoyed explore the state parks as well. She offered advice to not miss Dames Ferry Campground Site #28 where "you wake up in the morning looking out your tent at the lake all around".
