CAMP (Y/N?): Y (2 nights, car camp) MY ACTIVITIES: Kayak, Hike NOTES: quiet & friendly, lovely quiet lake, pristine campsites This sweet little state park is certainly one I enjoy. I went for the first time in Fall 2018 with my Aunt JoAnn and Uncle Larry. I threw up the biggest, gaudiest tent in their "front yard" of their RV (where they have ALL the camping necessities and luxuries including blooming potted plants brought from home). Camping with them almost guarantees amazing home cooked style meals and a roaring campfire at night. This time around, I had made springtime reservations earlier in 2019 after a trip to the Okefenokee Swamp in south GA, where I had gotten the 'want-to-canoe-bug'. I recalled the calm waters of Lake Burton, a perfect place to start learning with my 12 year old. We rented a tandem (2person) sit on top kayak and explored the lake early-morning Sunday. For Saturday, we had explored in the morning and hosted my cousin Rebecca and her family in the afternoon - the very RAINY afternoon. The planned cookout was changed to a trip into Clayton, GA for food. Several quaint options there including the Universal Joint (burgers, etc in an converted car station).
One of my favorite memories of this trip was my morning coffee quest. The office had some coffee, and although certainly drinkable, it was the conversation with the friendly and wise Park Clerk Mrs. Barbara that held the most energizing. I remember her from my first trips to Moccasin Creek SP also, so I am hoping I'll see her next visit. This was the first fire I recall starting without any input from someone else. Several paper bags were consumed during the attempts to 'get it going'. :) Sunday afternoon, we were joined by my oldest child for a hike across the road from Moccasin Creek - Hemlock Falls Trail (a beautiful hike to/by some lovely water features). Also of note is the Lake Burton Trout Hatchery along Moccasin Creek and adjacent to the campground. Kids and Seniors are allowed to fish the creek.
